Winter Months - Skiing

Over the last couple of years much work has been done on the ski area with the new express telecabine from Samoens, which leads up to the revamped nursery slopes.

There are plenty of snow cannons if they should be needed to keep the nursery slopes open right to the end of the season .

The chalets are only a couple of minutes drive to the telecabines at Morillon and Samoens. There is a third telecabine at Vercland, just a short drive up the mountain from the chalet. There is plenty of free parking at all 3 telecabins and rarely a queue to go up.

The Grand Massif has some 265kms of downhill skiing, suitable for all levels, from the 5km (green) Marvel run at Morillon 1100, to the Cascades a 14km run around Sixt Fer a Cheval nature reserve, one of the longest in Europe.

The navette bus will bring you back from the telecabines at Samoens, Morillon or Sixt.

Once at the top there are some of the most modern chairs, including an 8 person (=3400 pers/hour) chair from Flaine,

The Flaine bowl offers some of the best and varied skiing. Lower down is Les Carroz, a linked Grand Massif resort fully connected to Morillon and Samoens. As usual there are plenty of bars, cafes and restaurants to take a break at whilst skiing, but also some rather unusual ones, such as that at Lac de Gers, accessed via Snowmobile.

There are ski schools at both Morillon and Samoens. At Morillon 1100 there is the Children’s village, which offers child care from 6 months. Children can be left for an hour, half day or full day. For children aged three to 4 years there is the option of being left in the nursery with or without them having a go at skiing. The village takes children up to 10 years.

In Samoëns there is also a childcare centre based in the village for children from three months to six years, open every day from 08.30 to 1800. At Samoëns 1600 is the Jardin des neiges for children first skiing from three years old.

It is probably worth phoning to book ski lessons and for the children’s village. We have negotiated a discount for our guests with ZigZag ski school.

There is extensive cross-country skiing and snow boarding, also raquettes. There are three state-of-the art “Jampark Concept” in three separate locations. The three parks have different themes. The most hardcore destination is in Flaine, where the park incorporates Half Pipe, BX (Boardercross) and Big Air jump. By contrast the Jampark at Morillon is especially built for children and middle of the range level is at the Samoens Jampark.

It is also possible to do heli-skiiing and parapenting. Also something not to be missed is a dog sleigh ride—the children will love it. The ice rink in Samoens is open during the day and also in the evening, so it is fun to go there for a skate before or after dinner.

We have skied the area for several years and not felt the need to ski in other areas, but if you should, you are only 20 minutes drive from Les Gets/Morzine and the Portes de Soleil or less than an hour from Chamonix.

Ski passes and sk rental are reasonably priced in comparison to many ski resorts.
